Wahine Painting made by Robyn Kahukiwa

In Extension, we learnt about New Zealand illustrators which lead to New Zealand artists. Robyn Kahukiwa!

We interpreted her painting (Wahine) and created our own version. Once we did that, we had to create a short movie about this painting. I hope you like my movie.

Abseiling (Camp Bentzon)

Camp is sadly over and I am so bummed out! With delicious food cooked by Mr Coop, and friends playing during free time, I definitely didn’t want to leave. But it’s over now so it’s time for a recap.

Loads of activities had me excited but there’s was one that I had fun doing the most. ABSEILING! Awaiting my turn, I looked upwards at the abseiling wall, petrified. “Not the greatest activity for me” I thought (I was afraid of heights). Although, we were given a choice to do the big wall or the small wall.

After a LOT of thinking I decided to take the big wall. Even though, I feared heights, camp was all about having fun, overcoming our fears and doing our best. So I gave a shot. It was finally my turn. Anxiously climbing up the ladder, one of the guide lines, we were taught was 3 points of contact. At the top, I looked down, feeling as if the wall was a never ending. Camilla had hooked me with ropes and the harness.

“I want you to put your heels over the edge” Camilla instructed. Over the edge my heels stayed, I spread my legs a little and Camilla said “Lean back”. It was at that moment that I knew I would be overcoming my fear soon. After a while, Camilla told me “You are now hanging over the edge”. From hearing this I was so thrilled and it was time to walk down the wall. When I got down, I was incredibly proud of myself.

This was just one of activities and it was AWESOME!! Camp was so fun and it was a once in lifetime thing.

YEAR 6 CAMP!!!

Can you believe it? YEAR 6 Camp is nearly here! Just one day to go and I am very excited.
First on a bus, then onto Ferry. Off we would go to Kawau Island! With beautiful animals and green trees, I definitely can’t hold this excitement.

Awesome activities, I would expect. Like: ABseiling which is where we have to climb up then with a harness walk down backwards. It seems really fun! Making rafts are one of the things I am looking forward to! We are given equipment and we have to create a raft. Once we have done that, we have to paddle out into the sea and around pontoon and back before your raft falls apart.

Another activity I can’t wait for is the Confidence Course. This will be such a high up, scary yet fun activity. One of the parts of the course is the Flying Fox. Flying through the bushes and trees, looking down at the ground as if I am giant.

I think the challenge for me in this camp will be the item. This is because we are not provided music. Apparently, there is no internet, no phones or technology. Although it will be fun to come up with a song or a dance.

Overall, I am so glad camp is coming up. I really can’t wait!

Couplet Poem about Summer and Camp

SUMMER:
Clear crystal water sparkling in the sun
Playing in the sand, everyone has fun
Huge waves crash into the rocks
In the water floating, are my socks
Wind blows by, I fly my kite
But I couldn’t see with the sun so bright

CAMP:
Looking forward to camp
Up the hills, we would tramp
No school for 4 days
Just relaxing in the sunshine rays
On the Concourse, I would swing
Careful, not to fall on something

Operation Flax

Freya and her mother’s new neighbor, Mrs Harper is going to remove the flax. “It’s a nuisance” she says. She is unable to go up or down her driveway. This is a problem for Freya and her mum because they love this flax. Mum uses the flax that through the fence to make baskets and ketes and Freya makes syrup for the tui.

Although Mrs Harper feels sad for them, she does not change her mind. Freya and  her mum then decide to try and persuade Mrs Harper by giving her a kete. Creating syrup, Freya put it in the other side of the fence, where Mrs Harper lives.

Mrs Harper loves the kete, suddenly 2 tui walk by to the syrup. “Come and look at this Terry!” Mrs Harper shouted. A man on a wheel chair comes outside and stares at the Tui. He hasn’t seen tui in a long time. On Friday afternoon, Mrs Harper pops by Freya and her mum and explains the digger is going to plant the flax at the back of her section. Terry enjoyed the tui so she decided to keep the flax.

Triathlon

Watching the soaking wet children, they launched into the cold slide. Each boy and girl glided towards the other side. I took photos as they all slid, biked and ran.

It was time for the girls to start their mini Triathlon. Brett turned on the hose and sprayed the girls as they shrieked of the freezing water. “GO!” someone shouted. One by one, they dived into the slide. Covered with soap and water, the girls ran back to the start as they laughed with joy.

Running towards the Transition Zone, they ran out with a bike then hopped on it. Taamai seemed to be in the lead, the blustering wind blew her hair while she cycled around the flags. Not far behind her was Taylah. Finally the girls got back after 2 laps of biking.

Jogging around the field, the drenched girls huffed and puffed, inhaling the air. Still coming 1st place was Taamai, following behind her was Doris. I watched as Taamai past the finish line. People were cheering, Doris passed the finish line right after.

Taking photos and watching people strive to succeed was awesome. I wish I could’ve joined in but that’s alright. I had fun taking photos.

SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS! MARY POPPINS!

Mary Poppins is truly a magical musical. It values love, family, striving for your dream, responsibility and having fun. I was lucky enough to go and see this SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS production (I went with my mum).

In this fun extravaganza, 2 very naughty children, Jane and Michael have made their nanny quit. Now their parents are looking for a new nanny. Michael and Jane created their own advertisement:

Wanted a nanny for two adorable children

If you want this choice position
Have a cheery disposition
Rosy cheeks, no warts!
Play games, all sort

You must be kind, you must be witty
Very sweet and fairly pretty
Take us on outings, give us treats
Sing songs, bring sweets

Never be cross or cruel
Never give us castor oil or gruel
Love us as a son and daughter
And never smell of barley water

If you won't scold and dominate us
We will never give you cause to hate us
We won't hide your spectacles
So you can't see
Put toads in your bed
Or pepper in your tea
Hurry, Nanny!
Many thanks
Sincerely,

Jane and Michael Banks

Unfortunately, Mr Banks rips their advertisement apart and throws it in the fire place. It somehow flies up the chimney. Suddenly a gust of wind comes about. A shadow of a woman holding an umbrella flies across of the room. The room goes dark and when the lights come back on, out of nowhere Mary Poppins is right behind the Banks Family! I was blown away!

I'm not going to go into too much of the show, you're going to have to watch the musical yourself. :)
Although the effects are very good! And when I say this is a magical production, I mean it! 2 men run behind a tree and come out with different clothes. Bert (one of the characters) pulls out flowers from a painting! Plus Mary Poppins pulled out a coat hanger and a potted plant out of her bag. Mary Poppins kept me on the edge of my seat. Always full surprises.

All the songs were very catchy! Especially SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS. But I loved all of them!

One of the parts of the show was easily my favourite. When Mary leaves the Banks family, she literally flew over the audience, I got a good look at her. I totally recommend you go watch this! It's funny, inspiring and much more! I LOVE IT!!

The Bush

As a tradition, every month, the Johnson family have a little picnic in the woods. Striding on the footpath, Toby sucked his lollipop as he held his balloon tightly. Emma frantically pushed buttons on her phone with blasting music in her ears. Suddenly a strong wind came about, Toby lost his grip and.... WHOOSH!! His balloon floated helplessly into the woods, Kate (the mother) let go of Toby and dug through her bag for something to eat. When she looked up Emma and Toby were gone.

“Emma! Toby! Emma!” panicking, Kate ran into the dark gloomy woods. Meanwhile, Toby followed his balloon, he jumped up and grabbed it, then out of nowhere he heard a noise. Rattling sounds came from a bush, he stepped back petrified. Out jumped Emma, “AHHHH” Toby screamed.

Bursting out laughing, Emma fell on the ground, holding her stomach. Calming herself down, Toby walked off with Emma saying “Oh, come on!”. Unexpectedly Toby tripped, face planting into the ground. Groaning, Toby lifted his head up and saw a bunny with huge adorable eyes and droopy ears. Toby stared continuously until the bunny opened his paw, revealing long sharp claws. It scratched Toby’s face, leaving blood dripping from his cheek.

Emma glanced down at the vicious bunny. It looked up, showing it’s bloodthirsty teeth. Both, Toby and Emma ran off. Trees with branches, thick and sharp, they ran through tearing pieces of clothes. Then they saw a light. Rapidly running towards it, the broke free out of all the thorns and thickets. They saw the picnic table they usually eat at. Kate sat there crying, “MUM?!”.

Toby, Emma and Kate ran into each others arms. Kate touched Toby’s cheek and asked “What happened here?” “Oh, just some crazy bunny” Toby replied, oh so normally. “Sure” mum said. They all laughed and sat down with their sandwiches.

An Unexpected Disaster (At the Shops)

On one typical afternoon I ran to the shops, hoping I could get something to eat. I dropped my money, as I reached for it, another hand with scars picked it up and gave it to me. “Hello, my name’s William Kimme”, his eyes were contrast (One blue, one brown). “Thanks” I utter. Suddenly, something hit me on the head. I was hit so hard, I could see stars then everything went black.

Rubbing my eyes, everything was blurry. I was inside a store. Pain rushed through my head. Looking up into a man with a ski mask, his 2 eyes seemed familiar. One blue, one brown. My head tilted to the right and I saw Lisia and Kaycee (my friends). The shopkeeper was tied up with tape over his mouth. Eyes wide opened, I was surprised. “What is he going to do to us?” I ask.

Of course, the shop was closed, the man approached us and reached out his hand with scars marked all over. I got a feeling, I knew this man. “Phones?” he requested, I didn’t have one (I’m only 10). Nether did Lisia. Kaycee stashed her phone and said “Sorry, no phone”. I smiled and looked at the man as if I said what you gonna do now?!

Walking over to the counter, the man stuffed money into his pockets, sat down and closed his eyes. Kaycee took out her phone, dialed 111 and ordered police men over. Lisia hugged Kaycee and whispered “Great Job”. Relieved, I gave her a thumbs up.

By now the man was asleep so I crept over silently. Careful, not to make a sound, picked up his gun and crawled back. “Phew!” I thought. Then, I heard a faint noise from a distance. It was sirens. Startled, the man jumped up and searched for his the gun. “Looking for this?” I say with a smirk.

BOOM! A police officer kicked open the door, I handed the man and the gun to the police. Outside we went and we saw the robber without a ski mask, revealing his face. It was......... William Kimme! Of course! The scars on his hands and his eyes! Shaking my head, Lisia asked “You know him?” “NO”. I replied.

William stepped into the police car, winked at me and gave an evil smile. I looked away, walking home with Lisia and Kaycee.
